History

In 1947, after graduating from the University of Missouri with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, William E. “Bill” Herzog moved to St. Joseph, MO and secured a position at the Missouri Department of Transportation. A few years later, Bill took this regional transportation experience with him to work at a local construction company.

In the 22 years he spent there, he advanced his career and became the general manager for the asphalt division. Eventually, Bill’s drive and entrepreneurial spirit compelled him to make the next logical move – to start his own asphalt paving company. In 1969, Bill founded Herzog Contracting Corp.

In Memoriam:
Stanley M. Herzog | July 16, 1949 - August 2, 2019

During his nearly 50-year career, Stanley served in numerous operational and managerial positions. When his father started Herzog in 1969, he was the company’s first official employee, starting out as a foreman on asphalt paving projects. In the decade that followed, Stanley moved into the role of Vice President of Operations as Herzog’s footprint grew nationally. When Herzog added transit operations and maintenance to its portfolio in 1993, Stan also became the CEO for Herzog Transit Services, Inc. In 2008, Stan became the President of William E. Herzog Enterprises.

Stan served as the Chairman and CEO of Herzog Contracting from 2009 until his passing in August 2019. His experience and leadership guided the organization to exponential growth, expanding its capabilities and service locations for rail and highway construction, environmental work, mass transit operations, maintenance-of-way services, and railcar leasing.
