Overview
In June 2005, Herzog was awarded the initial contract to provide operations and maintenance services to the New Mexico Rail Runner Express. Herzog managed the start-up, including staffing, training, vehicle testing, acceptance, and commissioning. Herzog also provided initial track and signal construction and improvements. Construction activities began in August 2005 and the service commenced in July 2006 on the 50 miles of Phase I service between Belen and Bernalillo, New Mexico. In December 2008, an additional 50 miles of service was opened between Bernalillo and Santa Fe. Herzog hired and qualified additional crews for this extension and completed additional track and signal work.
Maintenance-of-way responsibilities include track surfacing, track structure, tie replacement, track inspection, rail flaw detection, switch maintenance, bridge inspection and repair, signal and communications maintenance, railroad grade crossing safety devices and all other required maintenance activities.
Operations responsibilities include crewing all trains, revenue collection and crewing special event trains. Maintenance-of-equipment responsibilities include preventative, scheduled and non-scheduled repairs of locomotives and bi-level cars and coaches as well as daily and periodic inspections and cleaning.
